Important information about CAEN Rev.3

Every Romanian company must register CAEN codes at the Trade Registry. The principal code identifies your main revenue-generating activity. CAEN Rev.3 restructures the classification to 22 sections and introduces new codes for digital economy, renewable energy, and platform services. All companies incorporated before 1 January 2026 must update to Rev.3 by 25 September 2026. Many ONRC offices already require Rev.3.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right CAEN codes?+
Start with your principal activity — the one generating the most revenue. Then add secondary codes for other operations. When in doubt, check how your actual operations map to the official descriptions. If your situation is complex, it's worth getting professional advice.

What if I miss the 25 September 2026 deadline?+
ONRC will no longer accept filings using Rev.2 codes. Any company changes — adding a director, transferring shares — could be blocked until you reclassify. Many ONRC offices are already refusing filings from companies that haven't updated.

Can incorrect CAEN codes affect my tax regime?+
Yes. Certain CAEN codes are excluded from Romania's 1% micro-enterprise income tax regime. If your company is registered under an excluded code, you won't qualify regardless of turnover. Wrong codes can trigger penalties during a tax audit.

Do I need to update my Articles of Association?+
Yes. Reclassification requires filing amended Articles of Association (Act Constitutiv) with the Trade Register. If you also need other changes, these can be bundled into a single filing to save time and fees.

How many CAEN codes can a PFA register?+
A PFA may register up to 5 activity codes. Individual enterprises (II) may register up to 10. SRLs and SAs have no legal limit, but should avoid listing irrelevant activities.

About this CAEN Rev.2 to Rev.3 converter

This free online tool converts Romanian CAEN Rev.2 codes to their CAEN Rev.3 equivalents using the official correspondence table published by Romania's National Institute of Statistics (INS) and aligned with the Eurostat NACE Rev.2.1 framework. The converter covers all 615 Rev.2 classes and maps them to the 1,615 codes in Rev.3, identifying five types of correspondence: Exact (one-to-one), Split (one Rev.2 code becomes multiple Rev.3 codes), Merged (multiple Rev.2 codes combine into one Rev.3 code), Recoded (code moved to a different section), and New (entirely new activity code in Rev.3). All Romanian companies — SRL, SA, PFA, II, and IF — must complete the reclassification at the Trade Register (ONRC) by 25 September 2026. This tool helps you identify the correct Rev.3 mapping before filing. For professional assistance with the reclassification filing, contact Mihai Attorneys — licensed Romanian corporate lawyers handling the full process remotely, in English, at a fixed fee.
